WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Winnipeg Mennonite Elementary & Middle Schools (WMEMS) is excited to announce that the 2022 recipient of the Alumni Scholarship is Savannah Olson.
Olson is a former WMEMS Bedson student who is graduating grade 12 from Westwood Collegiate. She was accepted to the University of Manitoba to pursue a career in medicine. Her goal is to end up in obstetrics.
“I want women to have a doctor they can trust to provide them with accurate information,” Olson wrote in her application. “A doctor they feel comfortable with, who they can openly discuss any concerns with; and a doctor they can trust to handle their body properly and bring their child into the world.”
The 2022 recipient wrote that WMEMS taught her many of the necessary lessons going through high school and will need in university. However, the most important thing Olson said she learned is kindness.
“I learned kindness in the simplest forms yet the ones that can impact people the most. I learned to hold the door open for others, to listen to other people’s opinions, and to give others the attention they deserve,” she wrote.
Olson received the $1000 scholarship at the Bedson Campus Spring Concert on May 19.
The WMEMS Alumni Scholarship is given annually to an alumni student who is graduating grade 12 and entering post-secondary. It was created to celebrate students who demonstrate academic, community, and leadership excellence. A staff team narrows the candidates before sending them to a third-party volunteer. The volunteer receives redacted applications and decides on the winner.
